Italy passed a law that grants women three days off from work if they have painful periods. The leave is paid so women don’t have to take sick days off for bad period cramps. Not all cramps are severe, but about 80% of women experience period cramps. Italy is the first Western country to offer the menstrual leave policy. Simonetta Rubinato a politician who put the law forward along with three other female law makers stated,”Resending their right to be absent from work during that time means they will be much more productive when they return.”

Japan, South Korea, and Indonesia are some of the countries which offer some sort of menstrual leave. Taiwan offers three days off if the women suffers from cramps. Bex Baxter, a Coexit’s directer, said,”Many companies are male-dominated and encourage long hours but there is a misconception that taking time off makes a business unproductive.” Which is highly unfortunate for the one in seven women that experience severe cramps. According to multiple sources, some more severe cramps can be as or more painful than having a heart attack.

The three day leave has divided opinions, some people agree with the law and believe that it accompanies worker’s biological needs. They think that employers could become more intent on hiring men rather than women because they do not have the menstrual leave offer. The employment rate for women is 61% which is much less than the EU average of 72%.
